This is probably going to do shit, but I am boycotting the Olympic Games. Like, I will not even watch a single game on TV.
This is probably going to do shit, too, but from now on, I wish all sorts of bad things upon Beijing. I hope your fucking economy crashes or something like that.

Doomed: Terrified cats crammed tightly into cages are hauled off to a meat market in Guangzhou
Thousands of pet cats in Beijing are being abandoned by their owners and sent to die in secretive government pounds as China mounts an aggressive drive to clean up the capital in preparation for the Olympic Games.
Hundreds of cats a day are being rounded and crammed into cages so small they cannot even turn around.
Then they are trucked to what animal welfare groups describe as death camps on the edges of the city.
Rest of the article here
But then, what do you expect from China— a country where human rights violations remain widespread and systematic? It’s not surprising that they treat animals this way.
This is sick and disgusting beyond words and something needs to be done about this.
I go hug my cats now :(

Hi, my name's Helga Weber and welcome to my personal site. I'm 24. My first socio-political scandal will happen at the age of 35 and will include men, sushi, an African country, and lots of money. My lover is the greatest.

Sad. :(
I followed that link and read the rest of the article… OMG, that’s horrific. You boycotting the Olympics won’t have any effect, but you blogging about the issue… has an teensy eensy bit of impact… as I’m now boycotting watching it too.
O_O That’s… horrific. It’s like I’m hearing the cacaphony of thousands and thousands of distressed cats in my head.
I go hug my cat Max now.
This is appalling. That’s really really cruel. I’d understand rounding them up and putting them in proper animal pounds to be placed up for adoption. But leaving them to die is horrible.
Poor cats. :(
SHUCKS!! Those people are heartless! tsk tsk. Tama, iboycott ang olympics!
Poor kitties! Ew…meat market? The thought of eating a cat makes me sick. I’ll have to read more about this when I get home from school!
Goes for dogs as well, they on the other hand, get cooked:
http://soulknitting.blogspot.com/2005/10/dog-killing-cooking-eating-so-much.html
Sorry babe… =(
I wanna sue China =(
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! They’re gonna become siopaos!! :(
Ouch :(
Oh gawd – why did I click on “thegreatest” link?!?! :( :(
Does that mean mean we’ll boycott MaLing too?
:(
I haven’t had Ma-Ling ever since they showed in the news that it contains formaldehyde. FUCKIN CHINESE, RUINING EVERYTHING THAT’S GOOD AND YUMMY.
onga yummy di ba? i miss maling.
is thegreatest chinese? hehe. :P
hoy!
Holy fuck. That sucks.
I’m all for kicking random dogs on the street (and in our house), but I sorta love cats. Especially LOLcats. But I’m not LOLing at this. It’s just wrong.
I love cats. This sickens me!
That is pretty sick. WHY exactly are they doing this?
P.S. I am judging you a bit for listening to Neyo.
I dont really like the idea that the Olympics will be held in Beijing when hello they dont even have issues regarding human rights and stuff!
this is abominable..
i am an animal welfare advocate and i really feel sad whenever i see something like this. it’s hard to try to make a difference when some people do not deem animals as living creatures who can feel pain.
i wanna go kill some Chinese now. lol
As a pet owner and animal rights activist myself, I am totally horrified with the way China is treating its strays!!! Beijing is going through such lengths to help the Olympics be successful it’s terrifying (there’s a story on wired about how they’re modifying the weather to prevent rain)… I’m completely appalled & will boycott the Olympics with you!!!
Wait, I didn’t know that. MODIFYING THE WEATHER? That is crazy beyond words. Are they even thinking about how this might impact the rest of the world? The Olympics shouldn’t have been held there.
OMG WHY THE CATS!!!
Sadly, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard about shameful animal cruelty in China. :(
Agreed !! The horrors that this regime continues to commit on the poor Chinese, Tibetans and Uygurs Muslims Taiwanese North Koreans etc. There is no hope for this success of this regime at all. 33 + million people have already resigned from the Ccp.
Nothing can save it.
The only turning point for democracy around the world will be when the communist regime falls in China and 1.3 billion people will be free.
Until that happens a regime that brutally has murdered 80 million Chinese in the last 60 years and today continues its suppression of 1.3 billion people will never make a safe world.
Chinas Internal Human rights issues are the most horrific with live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners organs for sale to the highest bidder. Livers in 2 weeks kidneys in a week, Its all in a report at http://organharvestinvestigation.net/
33 + million have already quit the Ccp

I’m reading your blog right now, and I’m particularly interested in The Real China and the Olympics entry. It’s blatant corruption! And I know that most— if not ALL— countries whitewash their affairs for the international community, but is it too much for the Chinese government to be a liiittle bit dignified and at least hold on to their promise of alleviating their human rights issues? I guess not. This is…wow.
grabe, i love cats pa naman. share ko lang, before i went to my friend’s house in fort bonifacio, tapos yung mga soldiers don binabaril yung ibang cats :( saad..
Hmm, I don’t want to come off as unsympathetic to cats (heck, I love cats), but how exactly is this different to slaughtering of cows and pigs? I find it weird that we have this double-standards on animals.
[and for the record, I don't eat meat]
This is going to open a can of worms and there is no way to win this argument, but mkae. I could say “BCUZ KITTEHS R CUTE ND COWS ND PIGS R NOT ND THEIR STUPETS”. I could also say that it’s cultural and cows, pigs, and chickens are bred and farmed to be eaten. I’m not saying that this is totally ok because animals are animals, but it’s something the majority of the world’s population (excluding the cow- and pig-worshiping folk) is accustomed to. Now if cats, dogs, iguanas, parrots etc etc were bred and raised for the same purpose, then I’d be all right with this POINTLESS SLAUGHTERING AND MASSACRING OF MY FAVORITE ANIMAL.
oh boy, i’m fighting the urge to argue with you babe…lol
I DELETE UR COMMENTZ. Oh srsly, how can you (meaning, I) defend this and not sound like a hypocrite? I eat meat and dairy produce. Cats aren’t endangered animals so there’s no need to launch a SAVE THE LOLCATS movement. Wait, what’s your argument, Mr Hunter?
Hmm I’m not sure about the “bred to be eaten” theory. Who decided that? Us. Humans. Same being that has decided that cats can be pounded, slaughtered and eaten. Now if cows flocked to us and say “Moo meat me!’ then that’s a different story.
Additionally, if we’re supposed to judge who gets eaten by moral projections alone, then cats deserve it more than pigs. Pigs are not belligerent animals. Cats are fierce when you piss them off (just ask the scar at my left brow). And if purely by measure of intelligence, it’s been scientifically proven that pigs aren’t stupid.
Perhaps the only thing valid about what you said is “cat is cute” but then again, some would think that pigs, cows and chickens are cute too. George Clooney likes pigs.
I’m not exactly trying to prove anything here. I just find this reaction curious.
We’re… or I am used to cows, pigs, and chickens being slaughtered for food. Lover mentioned a…”philosophy” of his when it comes to hunting: only shoot what you (can) eat. Perhaps this is how I see it when it comes to these animals and it may seem brutal: they’re killed for a purpose. So it’s ok. …That really sounds bad, but there’s not other way for me to put it. And like I said in my previous comment, there’s no difference. Animals are animals.
The cat death camps in Beijing? I have two problems for this. Wait, three.
1) They’re killing cats, my favorite animal. And I know that not everyone loves cats as much as I do.
2) They’re doing this for the Beijing Olympics. I’m sorry, but I think that they need a better reason to justify their slaughtering animals.
3) The manner in which they are carrying this out and killing the cats. The government says it’s because the cats are diseased, but a lot of perfectly healthy cats are being rounded up, locked in cages, and left to starve and die with diseased cats (when there are
morehumane ways to handle this). The government is spreading propaganda and scaring pet owners into abandoning their cats. Even animal welfare groups can’t do anything!Farmers aren’t being scared by propaganda distributed by the government into ditching their cows and pigs into the street, to be rounded up and left to rot in their own faeces until they die a slow, painful death either of malnourishment or disease. Cows and pigs are at least given the ‘decency’ of immediate death when they’re ‘ready’. (Certainly in the UK; I do not speak for other countries.)
We’ve moulded a society whereby cows are food and cats are pets, you cannot be surprised that people feel it’s unethical and sick to treat the cats in this way?
I didn’t read the rest of the article on the link you gave…what I’ve read here is enough. OMFG, those poor cats!
I’m disturbed. I hate China now.
Ridding of the cats for the Olympics, pffft! That’s a big lump of bull I say! They’ve been slaughtering and eating cats since the Ming dynasty.
Siopao, anyone?
Oh my gosh – that is horrible! I have the best cat (EVER) and I cannot believe so many are being treated like that :(
What I hate are people pro-animal testing… They say that they’d “rather have animals get sick and die rather than my brother.”
Well, screw your brother; he shouldn’t doing things like that in the first place…
Like… Humans have a choice in what they do. Animals are taken, drugged, killed, made to suffer… And they are obviously not saying “sure, do that to me! :D”
I can’t see if there are any fat cats in there (they’re the only ones I like), but !!!!! And all that to CLEAN UP FOR THE OLYMPICS?! WHUT?!
“We’re… or I am used to cows, pigs, and chickens being slaughtered for food. Lover mentioned a…â€philosophy†of his when it comes to hunting: only shoot what you (can) eat. Perhaps this is how I see it when it comes to these animals and it may seem brutal: they’re killed for a purpose. So it’s ok.”
“…That really sounds bad, but there’s not other way for me to put it. And like I said in my previous comment, there’s no difference. Animals are animals.”
You just contradicted yourself. You said there is no difference, but somehow it’s better to kill cows than cats?
“1) They’re killing cats, my favorite animal. And I know that not everyone loves cats as much as I do.”
Hey, I love cats as much as you do and it’s also my favorite animal (well, next to Polar Bears).
“2) They’re doing this for the Beijing Olympics. I’m sorry, but I think that they need a better reason to justify their slaughtering animals.”
I essentially agree with this, but we’re talking about China. This isn’t the only thing they’re doing to gussy up for foreigners, and I really think all these “making China more presentable” is a thick wad of bullshit. Pakitang tao, in other words. If they have so much problem with what surrounds them, why are they only “solving their problem” when there’s Olympic? What will that achieve other than feigned pleasantry?
Anyway, if you’ve ever been to China, you’ll be appalled at how immoral and disrespectful its citizens are. Most of them don’t give a flying cowpat what happens to anyone.
“3) The manner in which they are carrying this out and killing the cats. The government says it’s because the cats are diseased, but a lot of perfectly healthy cats are being rounded up, locked in cages, and left to starve and die with diseased cats (when there are more humane ways to handle this). Eh, you have to go to slaughterhouses yourself to see how cows and pigs are treated. Cats are rounded up and executed quickly. What about these farm animals? They practically spend their entire life for the inevitable: They live in cramped spaces, get injected with some drugs so that consuming them will be “healthier”, and have some organs “modified” so that mass production will be less problematic (for instance, did you know that chick’s beak get clipped off?). They have no freedom. Actually, they live in conditions similar to the prisoners of Nazi concentration camp.
So really, what I’m seeing here is a turning a blind eye to a kind of animal but sympathizing the other. Which may or may not be wrong; I just don’t see how that will solve any problems.
And, uh, sorry, I forgot to post this message as a reply to your reply.
I know that I contradicted myself.
Eh, you have to go to slaughterhouses yourself to see how cows and pigs are treated.
I don’t, actually, and wouldn’t want to :( There are documentaries on these that have left me horrified.
Cats are rounded up and executed quickly.
No, they aren’t. They are rounded up AND LEFT TO STARVE AND DIE.
What about these farm animals? They practically spend their entire life for the inevitable: [...]
Now this is the tricky part. There are laws regarding how slaughterhouse animals must be treated, but are these laws actually followed? It’s just like the idea of human rights. From the Wiki article: because of the speed with which they are required to work, animals are routinely skinned while apparently alive, and still blinking, kicking, and shrieking
So really, what I’m seeing here is a turning a blind eye to a kind of animal but sympathizing the other. Which may or may not be wrong; I just don’t see how that will solve any problems.
I’d like to think that I’m not turning a blind eye to the plight of farm animals. Sure, I do not campaign or demand for humane treatment of these animals nor is sustainable farming an advocacy of mine (but I’m all for it, really) and I’m sure as hell not about to jump on the PETA bandwagon and start socially terrorizing people for their choice of food— I mean, what can I say? I love my fried chicken and I love my KFC.
By “solve any problems”, what do you mean? There are steps being taken and vows being made (I know, it’s funny) to improve (farm) animal welfare. As I see it, the only way to solve whatever problems you might be implying is to have the whole world stop eating meat and stop wearing animal skin.
By “solve any problemsâ€, what do you mean?
By solve problems I mean disallowing the killing of cats.
There are steps being taken and vows being made (I know, it’s funny) to improve (farm) animal welfare. As I see it, the only way to solve whatever problems you might be implying is to have the whole world stop eating meat and stop wearing animal skin.
Yeah, that’s pretty much what I’m implying. I’m not saying that we have to do this. I’m saying that if we’re going to abide to some double standard of “fine you can kill cows, but not cats” then it’s more likely to create confusion than be a solution. I see that in the same way as “You can buy guns, but not shoot people” laws.
Are you also saying that not having double standards when it comes to animals will solve the problem? Because I feel that the issue at hand here is being ignored: WHAT THE HELL IS CHINA DOING. To cats :P Well, to animals (and humans).
Calling out people on having double standards won’t solve anything, either.
Are you also saying that not having double standards when it comes to animals will solve the problem?
Things are of course not that simplistic, but… well, I’ll let you finish before I say anything further.
Because I feel that the issue at hand here is being ignored: WHAT THE HELL IS CHINA DOING. To cats tongue Well, to animals (and humans).
Ok, yun na nga. I’m more concerned with how China will respond if we ask them not to slaughter cats. They’ll say “How is this any different to slaughtering cows?” The only thing that’s gonna happen with that is some hemming and hawing. Let’s not forget that China has a curious standard of what is unacceptable.
Also, about the olympic, boycotting it now for whatever reason is too late. The tickets are already sold out, flight tickets bound for Beijing are sold out, and I don’t think it’s likely that people will change their minds about watching the Olympics because of cats.
Quite a sad truth to state, in fact. :
Well, the boycotting thing was the action that immediately popped into my mind when I came across that article. And I already admitted to that being useless as useless goes. And people actually are NOT supporting the Olympics because of China’s record of violating both human and animal rights. But you’re right: what can be done at this point? China won the bid 4 years ago and nothing was done to prevent the Olympics from being held there.
Ok, I was going to stay out of it, but since I’m getting a certain sense of “lets argue till a point shakes out” from this comment thread, let me jump in.
First of all, I’m going to lay down the culture card. Since, both you and Helga are appalled at the treatment of animals in China AND the morality/manners of the chinese were brought up. Unless one has studied the chinese culture, seen their history, and even attempt to speak their language, we are just not in any position to judge their morality and manners by any of our western inspired ones. Note this isn’t a defense of China, its people, and their ways, just a reminder that when judging such things, perspectives must be considered.
The same thing applies to the treatment of animals. We obviously see things from our own culturally influenced perspectives and force the application of it on other cultures and other people. That’s the biggest mistake PETA makes.
As for this entry, clearly one missed the fact that the majority of the entries in this blog was written with tongue firmly in cheek, and it is so in this entry. Distilled down to its basic plea, it is just Helga saying, please don’t hurt the cats…because I like cats. Something should be done about it, yes…like please don’t hurt the cats. There is no hypocrisy in it, though some would try to grasp at that straw, just a very human (and Helga) plea to not hurt another sentient being, one she obviously adores. The yes-I-eat-burgers-and-love chicken double standard was called out before the entry ended, intentionally I might add, to draw attention to the fact that there was no real activism implied. To say that one contradicted herself in a self-confessed “no point” argument is an exercise in futility. The phrase “over your head” comes to mind though.
It is funny how the comment thread has gone from animal rights advocacy to human rights. Some people will jump at a chance to get on ANY soapbox, even one as slippery as this classic Helga construct. HUHLOLZ!
China treats its people like shit. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they treat animals this way. They should just go back to their civet rat chomping and die from SARS.
“China won the bid 4 years ago and nothing was done to prevent the Olympics from being held there.”
Yeah. I dunno, ever since the cultural revolution, China’s violation of human rights have been continual, and with that comes the decay of morality/sensibility.
What’s a civet rat? Is that what the civet CAT eats?
Oh my goodness!!!
how awful! as a cat lover myself I wish whoever treats animals and humans with cruelty shall die in hell (blehhh) I can’t help but cry when I saw this, I can’t believe it… masyado namang makasalanan mga ibang tao sa china, bakit naman ganun ano? noon nabasa ko yung tungkol sa mga babies na kinakain, (gasp) ngayon mga pusa??? aaargh, terrible people, I swear makakarma yang mga yan. siguro kaya marami ring sakuna nangyayari sa bansa nila dahilan na rin sa mga ginagawa nila (cries)
by the way I saw you through mybloglog, thank you for peeking, I’ve been a reader of yours for quite sometime now, never leaving comments, I just lurk, but I can’t help but comment on your post here about those cats. and while I was reading through tracy’s blog doon ko nakita blog mo. ^_^
nice to meet you…
take care and God bless!
That is so sad. Lets put them in cages! YEAH!
Apparently, I’m the only idiot who would put this link while criticizing Malu Fernandez. Hahaha
That’s really gross but true. Have you seen what they do to dogs in that country! They skin the animals alive so they can sell the fur as fur coming from other animals which are used to make clothing, etc. It’s disgusting! I’m sooo ashamed of being Chinese because of the stuff “my people” do. LOL that sounds kinda funny, but it’s so true.
That is sad. Poor cats :(
That’s disgraceful.
*boycotts China and adopts more cats* =^-^=
