That's really gross but true. Have you seen what they do to dogs in that country! They skin the animals alive so they can sell the fur as fur coming from other animals which are used to make clothing, etc. It's disgusting! I'm sooo ashamed of being Chinese because of the stuff "my people" do. LOL that sounds kinda funny, but it's so true.

Ok, I was going to stay out of it, but since I'm getting a certain sense of "lets argue till a point shakes out" from this comment thread, let me jump in.

First of all, I'm going to lay down the culture card. Since, both you and Helga are appalled at the treatment of animals in China AND the morality/manners of the chinese were brought up. Unless one has studied the chinese culture, seen their history, and even attempt to speak their language, we are just not in any position to judge their morality and manners by any of our western inspired ones. Note this isn't a defense of China, its people, and their ways, just a reminder that when judging such things, perspectives must be considered.

The same thing applies to the treatment of animals. We obviously see things from our own culturally influenced perspectives and force the application of it on other cultures and other people. That's the biggest mistake PETA makes.

As for this entry, clearly one missed the fact that the majority of the entries in this blog was written with tongue firmly in cheek, and it is so in this entry. Distilled down to its basic plea, it is just Helga saying, please don't hurt the cats...because I like cats. Something should be done about it, yes...like please don't hurt the cats. There is no hypocrisy in it, though some would try to grasp at that straw, just a very human (and Helga) plea to not hurt another sentient being, one she obviously adores. The yes-I-eat-burgers-and-love chicken double standard was called out before the entry ended, intentionally I might add, to draw attention to the fact that there was no real activism implied. To say that one contradicted herself in a self-confessed "no point" argument is an exercise in futility. The phrase "over your head" comes to mind though.

It is funny how the comment thread has gone from animal rights advocacy to human rights. Some people will jump at a chance to get on ANY soapbox, even one as slippery as this classic Helga construct. HUHLOLZ!

Farmers aren't being scared by propaganda distributed by the government into ditching their cows and pigs into the street, to be rounded up and left to rot in their own faeces until they die a slow, painful death either of malnourishment or disease. Cows and pigs are at least given the 'decency' of immediate death when they're 'ready'. (Certainly in the UK; I do not speak for other countries.)

We've moulded a society whereby cows are food and cats are pets, you cannot be surprised that people feel it's unethical and sick to treat the cats in this way?
