I haven’t had my unnaturally-red red hair for two months when I started feeling anxious for a change. When my roots started showing, I told myself I would wait it out until the tips of my hair reached below my breasts before retouching. I figured the black to red gradient could pass off as ombre hair (aka laziness, really; something I’ve been doing since I started dyeing my hair 3 years ago). I then saw Abbie’s gorgeous gorgeous summer hair and felt pangs of jealousy (and love ♥).

Look at this beautiful lady. Photo credit: ♥
I was ready to do ombre hair properly (DIY, of course!) when I realized I wanted something… a bit radical. I adore Ruby Rose and her hair but I decided to take it further when I saw this photo, though I wasn’t so keen on having my hair buzzed down to a zero because I need hair to bleach and color.
In the end, I showed this photo of Alice Dellal to the stylist at Azta Katipunan.

His reaction when I told him what I wanted? “Sigurado ka?” (Translation: Are you sure about this?)
I’m not gonna lie— my heart did a little jump and my stomach knotted in nervousness. I quickly shook it off and reminded myself that hair grows back (amazing, rite). Besides, I waited twenty minutes for a stylist and and I would hate to have wasted my time.

Saturday afternoon.

HAIR DIY TIME!: Saturday night, post-bleach, pre-light gray dye,
post-Quiapo (I wanted to buy bookshelf speakers), among other things.

Sunday.

Douchey iPhone photo, pretending to look off into the distance.
Do I think I look like a boy sometimes? Yes. Does it bother me? No. Am I happy with it? ABSOLUTELY.
Okay, so that might not be completely true. I wish the stylist hadn’t shaved so high up/close to my hair’s part (and didn’t cut the added layers too short). Can you imagine how awkward that’s going to be when it grows out? That is going to stick out and look so bad three weeks (or less) from now. I can’t say that I’m not dreading it. I’m going to need some heavy-duty product to slick it down (recommendations would be most welcome).
I still feel giddy looking in the mirror, though!
I have also decided to keep it blonde until the roots start showing. I quite like this shade on me and I love the blonde to red gradient. I got what I originally wanted (ombre/two-tone hair) and more!
More photos! The white balance is all off because I took these in the office (excuses, excuses).

I’ll be taking better photos when the weather clears up!

Helga, you look beautiful, sexy, punkrock and androgynous at the same time.
I think what you did was a definitely good idea. If you’re having doubts, don’t. Just know that you totally rock that haircut, and I’m sure not a whole lot of people can do what you just did.
Also, I’m glad you posted the first picture. I wanted to dye my hair a drastic color again, but NEVER went through it ’cause I simply didn’t like the hassle of coloring the roots. The photo has probably changed my mind. Who knew long roots can look so lovely?
Again, amazing hair Helga! I’m having helgasmz just looking at all ymour pics.!!!

It looks great, Helga. Boo to any naysayers who wouldn’t recognize individuality if it slapped ‘em with a tunafishy.

I love that! I saw you post a picture on 8008zmb, and said I thought it looked great there! With these pictures, I’ll say it again! It suits you and you can most definitely pull it off! I know the feeling you describe, nervousness about getting it cut short. I went from as long as your hair is on the right now, to a pixie cut (like Rihanna’s and Sarah Harding’s old styles). I’m still growing it out now, and hopefuly when it gets to a certain length, i’ll shave it a little like you have! Love it, inspired! Rebecca.

I love it! So daring!
I’ve been meaning to dye my hair that shade of blonde. How do you bleach it? What process do you follow? It’s gonna be the first time I’ll color it into a more striking color than brown. :))

[...] What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before? Shave the side of my head. The Azta stylist botched it up, though, so I might do it properly in 2012. We’ll [...]
