Dear Internet

How do I begin writing about Punchdrunk Panda?

I first became acquainted with the Filipino brand a couple of years ago when I saw photos of their laptop bags and sleeves floating around Facebook. Cute!, I thought. Since then, they have been in my periphery; it’s hard not to notice their youthful and funky designs that I’ve always thought of as a less chaotic, more pleasing Tokidoki.

I’m really bad when it comes to reading and replying to emails, mostly because I made the mistake of keeping my work, blog, and personal messages all in one account. I like having everything in one place but things can get pretty overwhelming, especially when I fail to sort all my Google Alerts. I almost missed PdP’s invitation to a blogger hangout… good thing they sent me a message over Facebook, too!

Last Tuesday afternoon, I joined the Punchdrunk Panda team (consisting of Jen, Nica, and Pauline the super intern) and a handful of other bloggers at Pipino Vegetarian Restaurant (located at Malingap Street, Teacher’s Village, a jeepney-and-tricycle-ride-away from my apartment. Make sure to try their lemongrass+ginger+cucumber cooler, it is AMAZEBALLS) to take a peek at their upcoming camera strap designs and get first dibs on their latest ladies’ skimmers.

Punchdrunk Panda skimmers

These skimmers will be launched at Anteroom Sessions 2 on the 31st!

Five designs for five bloggers, with each blogger getting their preferred design on a first-come-first-served basis. Unsurprisingly, I was last to arrive and everyone had already picked their skimmers. Nica handed me Airmail and my little heart kind of went “Ohmylawd” when I saw the blue and red lines (reminiscent of grade school writing notebooks) and the handwritten notes on the toe caps. It took a few seconds to register that the shoe was designed like airmail envelopes (thus, the name), complete with a rose stamp! A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E. I was really glad that I ended up with this pair!

This aims to capture the nostalgia of handwritten notes. When Ge & Selena were younger, air mail envelopes were the most common vessels for their letters and the feelings that they wanted to express, and notebook paper was readily available to them at school. Doodles, paper games about love, half written lines from poems or songs all went into their notebooks, and, for the braver ones, these pages would find their way to the hands of the intended recipient. These pen-and-paper missives are physical manifestations of their emotions, and Ge & Selena feel that they carry romance and significance in ways that digital mail never can. Their design incorporates some lyrics from Slow Hello that express simpler emotions and are sent using simpler means.

I actually bumped into Ge at Cubao X last Friday and giddily— and not-quite-soberly— showed her my shoes.

I can be quite the sentimental fool, a sucker for romance and long-lost practices (with the exception of ligaw lol). Like most people, I had pen pals growing up, had my fair share of letters professing my 12-year old idea of love to Taylor Hanson (which I never mailed, fortunately lol), and I treasure the occasional postcard from online friends that come my way. There really is something about snail mail that email and ecards can never compare to.

Dear You,
I wrote a song.
It’s about you.
I hope you like
the words.
Me
The gentle
question of
YOU and I.

The skimmers retail for 1295PHP each and will be available starting March 31 during Anteroom Sessions 2 at Cubao X. There will be pop-up shops, live music (my friends, The Strangeness, will be playing), and DJ sets. Unfortunately, I will be out of town that day for Hanson’s Cebu show. I’m a bit sad that I won’t be there but it’s Hanson, after all :P
