Helga’s eBay Misadventures: Starfish Hair Clips

I’m a little obsessed with eBay (those darn China sellers and their free postage!!!) but since losing one income some time last year, I’ve managed to curb this addiction and not order cute and unnecessary stuff. I was in eBay rehab for close to 12 months and I was doing pretty well holding on to my hard-earned money.

Until the day before Typhoon Glenda hit Metro Manila. I was done with my work deliverables and I was feeling restless. I had money sitting in my Paypal that was too small to cash out.

What did I do? Hit up eBay.

The Starfish Hair Clips were too cute to pass up and at less than PHP50 each, I immediately ordered two (big spender, I know). I mean, LOOK AT HOW PRETTY THEY ARE:

Starfish Hair Clips

Today, I went to the post office to pick up seven parcels which I tore open as soon as I got to the office. I was most excited for the iPhone tripod (which turned out to be a regular tripod but that’s another blog entry for another day LOL MY LIFE) and these hair clips.

They came individually wrapped and I immediately noticed that one of the clips had a leg that was starting to tear off. That’s okay, that’s why I ordered two. I took the broken one out of its little plastic baggy to see if I could glue the leg back on. I noticed it was strangely soft.

Or as my co-worker said: parang bagoong.

I checked the other clip and saw that it, too, was broken. I gingerly pushed the broken leg to inspect and found it odd that there was something inside. Aren’t these things supposed to be made with, IDK, resin? It sure looked that way in the photos!

So I went to the original listing to read the description. Nothing odd.

Searched eBay for other listings. Maybe I can order four more and have at least one clip arrive in perfect condition, right? EXCEPT……………………

Starfish Hair Clips

What in god’s name… Material: Starfish.

Those poor starfish.

If anyone can direct me to a non-China seller where I can order MAN-MADE/SYNTHETIC STARFISH HAIR CLIPS, that would be great.

First two images not mine.

APPARENTLY, THEY REALLY DO THIS!!! The ones I ordered probably weren’t dried properly kaya they smell bad. I checked Etsy and saw lots of ~natural starfish clips~ =/

Ordered a transparent one na lang. For sure, not a real starfish na yun haha.

“It is normal to have smells.”

Felt sad for the starfish. :(

Maybe you can let them dry out so their deaths will not be in vain?

    • Reply Helga August 19, 2014 at 1:42 pm

      They’re too soft =/

Di ko din maiisip na totoong starfish ang material. Para din syang:

    Material: Pressed Flower Petals

In the earlier parts of the post, I thought they’d be made out of those polymer clay stuff.

And they sell for so cheap, too, so it makes me wonder how many starfish they have =/

Eeek soft? Poor starfish. I’m thinking it’d be cute to make molds out of it para di sayang. :(

    • Reply Helga August 19, 2014 at 1:43 pm

They’ve been kept inside a microwavable container under my desk since Friday. I fear cracking it open hahahaha.

When you mentioned that someone said it smelled like bagoong, I had a feeling they would be made of real starfish. OMG, poor starfish!!! T_______T

      I know :(

OH, ok, never thought they’d be made of real starfish :(
They are cute, for sure, but yeah, they belong in the ocean.

Oh and humpster here: I was eating sausage-salad. Sounds good, huh? Fat-free, keeping-you-thin Bavarian food :P

What the hell. Did they just catch them before they shipped them or something? I remember shops in FL selling real starfish, but I don’t remember them having a smell. That shit was fresh. :-( They looked so cute in the product photo too..

What the hell! I’m also an avid ebay buyer and I saw this listing before. I wanted to order one but put off the idea because I decided to just go with the makeup brushes. Good thing I did!
