I do a lot of my shopping online for two reasons: I don’t want to go through the hassle of combing through shops and a lot of the things I want to buy (like certain makeup brands) aren’t carried locally. Whenever I scroll through my Instagram feed and chance upon a seller’s latest post, I go to their profile to see what else they have. If something catches my eye, I take a screencap and make a mental note to go through my camera roll later.
(99% of the time, I forget I even took a screencap and I end up erasing them when I mass-delete photos.)
I never ever buy anything on the spot because I CAN’T. I have to either leave a comment on the photo, fill up an order phone or message the seller on Viber and I HATE having to do that.
Instagram is great but it’s a social media network and not really a selling platform, ya know?
My search for a tube of LA Girl Dreamy led me to Shopee, an m-commerce app I’ve had for a while now because I plan to use it to sell some of my things. I was browsing my Instagram feed one drunken Saturday night and chanced upon a makeup seller’s LA Girl post; Dreamy caught my attention but instead of screencapping the post, I pulled up the Shopee app, searched for the lipstick, chose the one I wanted to purchase and tapped on “like” to save it to my profile. The next Monday, I went back and bought it.
Purchasing with Shopee is easy and no longer requires leaving a comment, texting, or messaging the seller on Viber (and then waiting for a reply with further instructions). Just follow the check-out process and pay via bank transfer or deposit to one of Shopee’s bank accounts.
Paying via credit card is currently unavailable but I was told they’ll be offering this in the future. I opted to transfer money online using BDO; in a few minutes, I was uploading a screencap of my deposit. Shopee takes 1-2 days to verify your transfer/deposit and I got confirmation of my payment Tuesday morning. Now it’s just up to the seller to ship out my order!
Like all online marketplaces, it pays to be careful before tapping “buy now.” Always remember to read the description carefully to know if the item is brand new or pre-loved, and then check reviews if there are any! What I like about the app is that it protects you with the Shopee Guarantee— Shopee holds on to your money until you receive the item you bought. Only until you confirm via the app that you received the order will Shopee release payment to the seller.
Download the Shopee app from the App Store or Google Play Store here.
