Quick and Easy: How I Sharpen Photos

I got this question on Tumblr:

Oops, I forgot to ask this but do you sharpen your photos? If so, can you possibly come up with a tutorial? I wanna learn how to sharpen images without them looking too overly done. Thank you!

It is really super easy and I know a lot of people do it this way. I used to use the unsharp mask (I still do, when sharpening my eyes) but my problem with that filter is that it sharpens the background of the photo, too. I’d rather keep the bokeh, well, bokeh!

I was on Tin‘s blog today and thought “Wow, I really hate how this looks.” I can say that and not offend Tin, since I was the one who last tweaked her template anyway.

Bored, miserable, and trying to keep my mind off these Mrs. Fields gift baskets (the sugar cravings have been off the hook lately), I sent her an IM asking if I could change her blog’s look. Two hours later, I had this:

Clean, simple, yummy colors, and my current favorite font (Bebas Neue). I couldn’t get Cufon for Blogger/Blogspot to work, but I might give it another go one of these days (Google Font library and Kernest don’t have Bebas Neue). Eventually, I would like to come up with a logo of sorts for her blog, something that will constantly be there with every face change. I need one of those for this blog, too, actually. Perhaps mine could be a cat with an ampersand.

The perks of having a web designer (who needs to work on her portfolio) for a friend!

New Year, New Look

I made some changes to my blog.

NOTHING CRAZY, really. Just a fresh header, color scheme, and some minor tweaks to the sidebar. I’m still not done (I still have a few changes to make) but I decided to go ahead and launch it since my blog has been on maintenance mode for far too long now.

Fonts used are Bell MT, Men In Black Credits (header), and Nevis (post entry titles). My boyfriend HATES the deer antlers the letter R has but that’s because he hates animals and should be punished with twenty pet cats.

What do you think? Like it/hate it/don’t care about it?

Edit: Ugh, I hate the WP Sifr plugin that I’m using. It converts the text to Flash instead of an image. I might look into that and change it.

HOW I PROCESS MY PHOTOS, PART I.

People have complimented the colors in my photos and some have asked that I share my “techniques”. If any of you have noticed, I have a way of processing them and that I generally have 3 or 4 “color schemes” (that are similar to each other, just some minor tweaking). At first, I was hesitant to share (I still kind of am) because I don’t want to see a buttload of photos with the same colors/processing as mine and because my adjustment layers are a hot mess (when I edit my photos, I just create new layer upon new layer and then save the PSD for future use). However, I am not a greedy person (lol) and I’m all for sharing stuff like this.

A couple of things: This works best for well-lit photographs. My adjustment layers, like I said, are messy, may sometimes be redundant, and are stuff I just came up with by experimenting (and reading alli reviews HUHLOLZ).

SECOND BATCH OF I-LOL-STRATIONS.

Not really illustrations but more like crap I whipped up in ten minutes with the pen tool and some patterns. I’ve posted the bird on Plurk (Fritz insists it’s a paru-parong ningning) and nicely enough, people have told me they find it cute. I’m hoping to incorporate these into a potential template for work (the idea is a scrapbook-y theme, except I suck when it comes to texturing and creating depth). We’ll see.

My creativity is at an all-time low. I can’t even make a decent blog entry.

Three iLOLstrations I started some weeks ago that I never got around to finishing:

Number 1 is supposed to be a schnauzer. I clearly failed. Numbers 2 and 3 are obviously the makings of two cats/kittens. Again, I failed (number 3 looks like a Chinese emperor, for chrissakes). I wish I had a pen tablet and the time to learn Adobe Illustrator.

I’ll probably work on doodling pedophiles hanging out by swing sets next. That’s something I’m bound to get done and not leave half-baked.

Found on the internets: Disney fine art! I am neither an art connoisseur (I’m absolutely far from being one) nor a Disney fan (I grew up on The Adventures of Tin-Tin, Eke! OH HAI, CUPCAKE!

Another new theme, something I’m hoping to stick to for a couple of months. Not totally done yet, as I have to edit the CSS for my comments and then I validate my coding. *cries*

PS: This layout will most likely look like shit on IE. I tested my localhost version on IE and the Twitter and MyBlogLog scripts don’t seem to work. Bah.

PPS: I made the cupcake; it’s my birthday cupcake with a cherry instead of a candle. Heehee.

HALPZ, I’M STUCK IN WWW CIRCA 2003!

Day 2 of Dreamweaver class and this is what we’re doing:

Tables.

Now I have nothing against tables. In fact, I love tables. They’re nice to put things on and though it’s been proven that they’re not needed to properly eat a meal (because under certain circumstances— say, when you find yourself in a remote island with no electricity, no running water, and no cellular reception— your lap, one of your hands or any steady surface would do), they still make things a hell lot easier.

But seriously, who still uses tables in webdesign? And why does this goddamn school feel the need to devote four precious hours to this outdated bullshit? When we could be spending our time learning something relevant, like, I don’t know, Flash pre-loaders? CSS sprites? CSS-based navigations? Global warming? The plight of drunken elephants in India??? ANYTHING but goddamn tables!

I’ve just been PWOT-ed. I half-expected our instructor to tell us to incorporate glitter graphics and animated butterfly gifs into the site we made today.

You know what I need to do? Buy memory for my laptop.
